LA National Guard 1021st Engineering Company Quilt

Saturday was the BIG DAY! We assembled at the Covington National Guard Armory to present 168 quilts to the soldiers from the 1021st Engineering Company which deployed to Kuwait in 2014.

Pearl and the gang had been taking photos of groups of quilts over the past 10 months as they were coming in and we have posted them over these past months in our newsletters but on this day, they were all together for the first and last time prior to being distributed.

Unfortunately, not all the Company were on hand to receive their quilts but, fear not! All the quilts are in the trusty hands of the Armory and will be transferred to each of the soldiers in their hometown.

Here are some of the quilters, armed and ready with the first batch to go around the shoulders of the men and women of the 1021st.

Carol Miller was the spearhead behind this massive effort that brought in quilts from all over Louisiana and 4 other states. It takes dedicated people to turn out this type of result.

I hope, when you look throughout these photographs, you see the one(s) you made..... and the smile on the face of the soldier.  You cannot believe how touched these people were! They loved their quilts!

There was one VERY tall soldier who had been given, randomly, a rather small quilt in relation to his height. When we told him he could exchange it for a larger one, he politely declined, stating he loved his quilt and didn't want to exchange it. He had bonded with it in just a few short minutes....

Each and every quilt was wrapped in a pillowcase and Carol Miller & her Team cranked the majority (136 to be exact) of them out in record time. It's hard to see them in the photos but they are indeed with the soldiers now.

One of the quilters who came to wrap a soldier, Kathy Q.  opened a pillowcase only to find the very one she made! How serendipitous to wrap and meet the man who gets it!!!

These are a few photographs for you to see.... and if you come to the shop, you will be able to see the photos of your quilts as they hung from the balcony above the shop.

Thank you to Melinda Jones for sharing some of the following photos...

To all the men and women who serve in our armed forces and all the quilters who made this moment possible,

Thank You.

Ella Blue, m'Dears!

March brings shamrocks and leprechauns and also, if you are an avid quilter, the Worldwide Quilting Day. March 21, to be precise.

Quilting has truly swept the over the world and if you have ever been to the Houston Quilt Festival, you have seen first-hand just how popular our passion has grown throughout all the corners of this planet.

Not just creating the lovely works of art but also the very fabrics we use to make them.

Bright Hopes Quilting has been carrying the beautiful Ella Blue fabrics now for over a year and we recently received 2 new lines. These are designed in Australia by a staff of designers with quilters in mind and are really inspired by the modern look.

Having said that, they also have a slight 'homage' to the feed sack look but in a fresh new way. You really have to see them to get the full impact.

Well, the two new lines in stock are "Chirpy Lola" and "The Linen Cupboard". The Staff have been having fun making the popular SWOON block with "Chirpy Lola' and have hung them from the ceiling so you will see them on display as soon as you enter the shop.

We think this is the perfect fabric to make the cutest summer dresses for little girls, too. The fabric itself has a great feel and the motifs are cheerful and bright.

"The Linen Cupboard" also has a happy Spring-like look to it and the pattern, "The Daisy Quilt" features the fabrics on it's over.

These fabrics would be great on a Easter table runners or placemats.

Houston Quilt Festival 2014

We are so fortunate to be within driving distance to Houston and the International Quilt Festival!  Mary, Celeste, Mary, Jayne, and I recently attended the show, and we saw so many wonderful quilts!  We were inspired and humbled.

On the way we stopped at the Visitor Center in Grosse Tete.  What a nice surprise behind the building-a large wooden crawfish!

There are so many fabulous quilts to see!  This year there were 3000 quilts in the show.  It is hard to decide which are favorites!  I hope you enjoy the ones I took pictures of.
This quilt is titled Hurricane, made by a Dutch quilter.  Notice her jacket!

This display is an Yvonne Porcella exhibit.

The squares in this quilt look to be about 3/8".  The color effect is striking.

There were so many exhibits to see, and this one was tucked in the back.  These were miniature quilt stores in a space approximately 12" all around.

A very special exhibit was the red and white quilts Ruby Jubilee celebrating 40 years of Quilt Festival.

The quilt on the left was made using the background of the Hoffman challenge.
The one on the right is the Hoffman challenge cut into motifs and then pieced.

This quilt represents a radar report of a tornado.

I love all the little houses!

Wow!

Each house is from the students of a teacher, who made a quilt using all the houses.

Amazing dimension.

This quilt is very endearing.

I love the elephants!

This quilt is the result of all the license plates designed from all 50 states promoting American Made solids.

The logs in this fabulous Log Cabin look to be about 1/4"!  Stunning!

Fabulous lion!

And the tiger is equally breathtaking!

A vision of the earth.
