How To Take A Successful Class

We offer classes every week at Bright Hopes Quilting and hope our customers think the selection and teachers give them a variety of choices each month, from beginners to rather advanced techniques. There is something there for everyone and we love seeing the finished product, however long it takes. With quilt-making, there is no time constraint imposed. We think of it as a long-distant stroll as opposed to a sprint to the finish line.

So, okay, you have the list of classes and are fairly new to quilting. A natural question that comes to mind is "What can I expect from this class?"

Our goal for each student is get them familiar enough for the pattern and how to construct the various elements so that when she goes back home with her supplies and blocks, she is prepared to continue until the quilt top is complete. We offer plenty of classes that can be 'done-in-a-day' and even some that require a 2-day attendance. Some of our classes, however, are made up of multiple blocks and lots of them so there is no way you can expect to drive home with a finished product.

When we map out a class, we take into account the complexity of the pattern as well as the skill-set of the student and try to allot enough time to get the student ready to leave the shop armed with knowledge and experience to comfortably continue at home, knowing that if they run into trouble we are more than happy to help at a time when there is no class going on or during our Friday Sit & Sew morning.

That being said, it is most helpful for both the teacher and the other attendees for you to have purchased all the supplies you need for the class and the pattern ahead of time so YOU can come ready to learn. If a student arrives to class with an assortment of fabrics but needs more to make the pattern, that means she is not ready to begin on time! If the first time you lay eyes on the actual pattern is five minutes after you walk in with your machine, you will not be prepared for class.

Bring every tool listed in the supply list. If you don't have that specific tool, but a close proximate, bring that and ask if it will work. Chances are, it will. If it can't, you can buy the tool or work around the problem. But, if you leave your tools at home, you will have an awfully hard time sewing!

Speaking of which, if you DO need to buy thread, tools or  an additional piece of fabric for a particular class, please get here when the doors open and shop. We usually begin classes at 10:00 (unless the schedule says 9:30), for this very reason!  We understand that there comes a time when you do need just this one or other thing for the class and you realize the night before you don't have it. However, that doesn't mean you have time to shop for all the fabric as well! It take time to choose fabric and we want you to really like the selection, not just settle because of time-restraints.

Get to class early enough to be set up and ready to go BEFORE the class begins. It takes 5 minutes to haul your stuff in, pick a spot and unload.

If you arrive as class is beginning, it is very distracting for the the teacher and other classmates.

Always, if humanly possible, buy your pattern so you can read through it the night before class. You will have a better idea of what you are going to learn if you know what is ahead. You don't have to understand it, even though, you probably will.

"Why should I take a class if I already read the pattern? I thought you were going to TEACH ME?"

Good question! 1. Every class we teach has had a sample made so the teacher is familiar with construction and aware of issues or complications and knows short-cuts or better construction methods. With reading comprehension, anyone can take a pattern and work their way through it but why not take advantage of someone else's 'learning curve"?  2. What better way to meet new people and form friendships than doing something with others?

And just like when we were in school, our teachers would say (repeatedly) "Read the chapter the night before!"  and we would wonder why. Well, the teacher, if she/he was a good one, would have much more to teach than just the words out of that book. The same is true in crafting classes. There is much more to learn in each class than just that pattern in front of us.

Deus ex machina........

We at the shop have A working knowledge of sewing machines, true, but there are some very specialized machines out there, expensive and delicate, so it is always best if the student is completely familiar with that machine before they take a class with it in order for the class itself to run smoothly. It's always a good idea to bring your manual, just in case.  Know how to adjust for a quarter inch seam allowance or have a quarter-inch foot.  Most, MOST, of our classes require a 1/4" seam.   And fresh needles and filled bobbins. If you know what thread you are going to use, take a few minutes the night before and fill your bobbins, ladies! It takes time out of the precious hours to sit there and spin that bobbin!

Stay together, now.  "If I understand what I am doing, why can't I just continue on ahead of the teacher?" We understand it can be frustrating waiting for others to finish a step while we are sitting there, cooling our heels. But resist, if you can, moving on ahead of the teacher without letting her know. It happens often that a student moves a head of the pack and then make a mistake which now takes the teacher time to instruct  to undo and now, look who's wasting the time of the class. If you think you are ready to move on, ask the teacher. Chances are good that you can move on but at least give the teacher a head's up!

Ask questions! If something doesn't seem right, or doesn't seem to make sense, speak up! Keep in mind, you might not be the only one who doesn't understand but the only who says something!

Bring appropriate snacks and drink. If you need a mid morning break, do not be afraid to speak up. Low blood-sugar is not your friend.

We hope you had eaten a good breakfast and have plenty of energy when the class begins. Also, if the class is more than 3 hours long, bring a lunch. If you have to leave and pick something up, do your very best to be back within 30 minutes.

Lastly, shopping.
Who doesn't like to take a moment and look around a shop to see new things. There is usually time left over at the end of the day for shopping. But if your schedule does not allow for this and you really need to grab a few things before you head out the door, let us know and we can have a 'held receipt' on the register for you so as you start packing up, we can check you out quickly.

So to recap:

1. Have the pattern and supplies before the class.
2. BE ON TIME and READY.  If you need to grab something extra, get there early.
3. READ the pattern and familiarize yourself with the contents.
4. Have a working sewing machine you know and bring the manual, just in case!
5. Pre-wind your bobbins, ladies! (you too, guys!)
6. Stay with the class as it moves through the lesson.
7. Ask questions!
8. Bring snacks and drinks or a lunch as well. Stay energized all the way through.
9. Let us be your personal shopper and have your check-out waiting at the register if you have to dash out.

We want everyone to have an enjoyable day sewing and learning. Our time is limited and precious so let's make the very most of what we have!

Schedule of Classes Nov - Dec. 2014

Okay, Linda Kay just finished our new Newsletter/Schedule of classes...
here it is, hot off the presses!

As before, we are using two formats; PDF for those on standard computers and screenshots for you on iPads or iPhones.....

We have some great new classes being offered for the first time as well as some old favorites in case you missed it before. Please come in to sign up and get the class supply list. Some classes require patterns and prep-work before class so it's always a good idea to be familiar with what you can expect during the class in order to get the most out of your hours here.

Remember, Bright Hopes Quilting has the incredible $60.00 Class Coupon which happens to be the Best Deal In Town. For $60.00 flat you can take as many classes as you wish in a continual 6 month period. You can't beat this!

The ONLY THING we ask of you is for you to notify us in a timely fashion if you are unable to attend any class for any reason so someone on the waiting list can take your reserved seat.  What do we mean by 'Timely Fashion"?  Please don't call us the morning of the class and say you have a flat a tire or are not feeling well.  If there is a chance you can't make it, let us know at least by the afternoon before so we can call another customer. We don't run this like the airlines and overbook. It's only fair to let someone use their coupon if you can't make a class.

November - December Class Newsletter

Here is the new list of classes coming up in November and December .

If it is slow to load, give it a minute... it's a big file and no, you still cannot view it on an iPad or iPhone (go figure! technology....)

As always, you can zoom in with the bar at the upper left half of that window or print it out, all the pages or just the ones you want, by clicking the upper- left most icon/button that sort of looks like a printer.

Call early to book your classes! They fill fast.

We are heading to Market next week in Houston and I hope to keep you informed here on the blog of the cool goings-on. Otherwise, you can 'friend' us on Facebook and see the up-dates there.

If you are going to the Houston Quilt Festival at the end of October, have a fabulous time and enjoy all the gorgeous quilts!

See you on the other side!

Kathy Brown and More Take 5 Quilts

Kathy Brown at The Teacher's Pet has been designing some really beautiful fabrics lately and we have quite a collection on the shelves here at Bright Hopes Quilting. She is a very busy woman, creating new quilt patterns and books & touring the country. Her most recent book is "More Take 5 Quilts".

Linda Kay just brought in her striking version of the Buzz Cut quilt from this book and she used Brown's newest fabric collection, Maddie, in the sample.

This is a very large bed quilt and Linda Kay will teaching it on Friday, Sept 21. Give us a call to sign up for the class.

Drop by to see more of Kathy Brown's fabrics and pattern as well.

A Day to Play

I spent Friday at Linda Kay's, learning how to make one of these wonderful duffle bags from the book Easy to Make Totes with Zippers by Cindy T. Oates. LK has held a number of these popular 2- day classes and you may have seen some of the students' results here and in recent newsletters. In fact, here are two from her latest class last week!
Aren't they cute! These are the large ones. The booklet has patterns for 11 separate tote designs and I made one under supervision, the small duffle.

Playing in LK's spacious sewing room makes me both jealous and inspired. She has room to move around easily and is very organized. I would win every bet that she could put her hands on something within 3 minutes of wanting to, unlike me who has to excavate to dredge up some piece of fabric or a pattern I know I have but no clue where I put it. Oh, I always know approximately where but I am never consistent.

Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions.
(Yeah right)

Speaking of organized, I was shown this inspiring photo of one hutch with organized fabric from Myrlene P. Take a look at how nice it looks and stylish as well!

So anyway, here is my version of the small duffle and I really love how fast they are to make and how pretty they always turn out.

Let's face it: some days I just want to have fun! I just want to spend a few hours playing and have a little fun, instead of laboring over accurate points and large borders. Just a little fun. That is why I enjoy making things like the BOM, Seasoned Quilter. She was a hoot to make and now I get to play at making the "mini-quilts' she holds for special holidays. The last one the Welcome Quilt and next month is the Celebrate! Quilt and I can't wait to carve out another play day to make that one.

Well, yesterday got me so relaxed, I decided to make it a two-fer. Today I whipped out this!

This is "Open House", only one of Pearl's 'Snap Sack' series of little quilts-in-a-bag that we offer at Bright Hopes Quilting. "Open House" comes in three motifs, the Chicken Coop, The Dog House and a third that slips my mind at the moment......(ah me...... does this happen to you?) Naturally, I went for the chicken coop. There was just enough of the border fabric in my kit to squeeze out a little applique embellishment.

We have several different designs and every kit comes with all the fabric you need to make the whole quilt, except the batting. Yes, backing fabric is included. It is the perfect "Take to Retreat Treat" or gift bag for swaps. Or, if you are like me, for a personal Play Day!

May-June 2012 Calendar of Classes

Hot off the presses and thank you Linda Kay! Here is the latest schedule of classes we are offering May-June. We think we have a great selection coming up and hope you like what you find. If there is a class you are interested in, give us a call to reserve your place. And if you must cancel, please let us know as quickly as possible to allow someone on the stand-by list to get in. Here is a quick refresher course on the image below:

To view it in a more close-up view, use the scroll bar on the top of that image. Just grab in with your mouse and drag it to the right.

To make it fill the entire screen, click once on the small icon to the right of the scroll bar that (sort of) looks like a TV. WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED LOOKING AT THE LARGER SCREEN, CLICK THE SAME ONE YOU WILL SEE ON THAT BIG SCREEN, UPPER LEFT.

That will make reduce it back to the original size.

If you wish to print the whole PDF file, you can click once on the icon that looks like a printer (sort of) to the left of the scroll bar.

Now is all this is confusing and you ever want me to demonstrate these techniques in the shop, I am at the shop every Thursday, all day and occasionally teaching classes during the month. But really, everyone who works there can show you if you are having trouble understanding this new system.

Let us know what you think!

Been A While.....

,.. but I am back and it has been a hectic start to Spring but nothing new there.

We are gearing up to the GSQA Quilt Show next weekend and today, Pearl, Mary and I are hauling a car filled with quilts to enter. We have been seeing some amazing and beautiful work and I am so excited to be able to actually attend this year.

We will have our shop booth again set up during the entire show which is open from 10 am to 5 pm Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21, at the Northshore Harbor Center. If you click below, you'll get a map to the location

We sent out a newletter yesterday afternoon outlining a few items of what we will have in the booth this year and some of the samples of our quilts on display. If you have never attended one of GSQA's past shows, let me encourage you to get out your comfiest walking shoes, call a good friend to join you (even one that doesn't quilt!) and give yourself at least 4 hours to browse the quilts that hang for your pleasure. There is a tremendous amount of talent in these 4 states that support the GSQA.

Those of us lucky enough to work at a shop get to see quilts in every stage of construction but to see 360+ in one location at the same time is simply breath-taking! And time-stealing so be sure to give yourself plenty of that!

We held our staff-meeting to discuss our up-coming classes for May and June. We will revisit old favorites and of course, new projects as well. We will be posting the completed calendar within 10 days here on the blog.

A few years ago, Linda Kay came up with the idea of an adult "Quilt Camp" aimed primarily for teachers just getting out of class for the summer who wanted to play and learn and we all had a blast. (hey, why should kids get all the fun?)

It's a one week all day session that teaches the basics of quilt making, binding, machine quilting, applique and totes. The participants went home with 5 completed projects and a couple of them have gone on to become fellow quilters.

So that is going to be offered in mid-June. (heads up) If you know someone who has a hankering to learn what "we" love, tell them about this!

Are you struggling with storage issues for your growing or out-of-control stash? Pearl has these colorful drawer carts in stock that might be just the thing for you

She has several configurations as well. I like that they are on rollers for easy movement.

Celeste held another Chenille Rug class yesterday and although one student slipped out before I got to shoot the whole class, here are 5 with their nearly finished pieces. The real fun is taking it out of the dryer and seeing the final fluff!

To end this post and underscore the beauty of quilt shows, I'll add this link to a cute song and video of quilts from last week's email.

Enjoy the show and music

So I Walked In The Door And What Did I See?

These batiks arrived just two days ago and are already beating tracks out the door and small wonder why!

The flickering fleur de lis' are really beautiful and I love the color schemes we have here.

I don't know what I am going to make with them and I don't care. The point is they will be in my stash when the inspiration strikes! (I know! I know! Again there goes the New Years Resolution!) (What can I say? I'm a glutton for batik) This beautiful doesn't last long.

So, yesterday Celeste had her Happy Shacks class and there was a whole lot of giggling and carrying on over by the class corner. I have to share this shot of her and Mary Lou B as it I believe it truly sums up the mood at the store all day.
And in the midst of all this fun and frivolity, in marches the UPS guy and Fedex dude with boxes of new fabrics and of course I flip over these cute cowboy motifs!

Gee whiz! A girl can't catch her breath around here! Being from Texas has me wanting these too!
___________________

Mona has sewn all the blocks together now for the Amish with a Twist BOM sample and is busy on the appliqued outer border. I'll post again when the whole quilt is complete.

Want a cute idea for using UFO blocks that seem to accumulate? How about this! A customer wore this in the shop a few months ago and I thought I'd share it with you.

Wear your badge of honor proudly! We're QUILTERS and we are an army of many!

Newsletter Correction

Hi there,
A mistake was made in the body of the newsletter that went out two weeks ago.

For the class, Strip Six: The actual date of class is February 28.

In the description, it reads February 14. That should be Feb. 28. Sorry for any confusion.

January February 2012 Schedule of Classes UP-DATED!

Up-dated.... if you got here from clicking on the Newsletter, Here is your HOT-LINK to the new March -April 2012 schedule..... Click n that and you're good to go!

~Chris

We heard from some customers that they have trouble with the Schedule of Classes. Not able to see it or print it or save it to their hard drive. I hope to address some of this here:

First, if the image below is too small to read, you can increase the view by first making the window a full screen. Tap your mouse on the icon to the right of the percentage sign. That will make your view as large as your monitor. If you need it to be larger still, zoom in by holding your mouse over that blue slide button on the top and move it gently to the right.

When you wish to minimize the window, just hit your ESC button on your keyboard.

Now, for printing purposes, the easiest method is to tap on the small icon to the far left. (It looks somewhat like a printer). That will open a pop-up window that allows you to choose which pages you would like to print without doing all of them. Your individual printer will determine your additional options. Please go now to the bottom of that window below:

Do you see that line "Download document to PC" ? This is how you can download the entire schedule but it is a bit of a rig-a-ma-role and I don't recommend it.

HOWEVER: If you click on that, you will be linked over to the program, PDF CAST; I use this program to create the embedded PDF. It is cluttered with other information that looks very confusing but if you scroll down, you should find the word in large letters D O W N L O A D.

When you click on that, you will get yet another page that opens. Fear not. That should say something like this:

To continue, complete human verification below.
We are sorry for the
inconvenience, we need to make sure that you are not a malicious bot or
virus.
Complete the puzzle below to download the document, if you got
confused click reload button to change the puzzle.

If you wish to continue, you must enter the words in that small window and you should then receive the PDF to your computer. Once again, I don't recommend this.

If you really need a copy on your harddrive, send me a note here by email, and I'll email it directly to you. brighthopesquilting@gmail.com.

Okay, I hope this has been helpful.

Our Build a Block class is still going strong and Monday will feature the Flying Geese block. This indispensable block is one of my favorites and Mary Gerardi is the teacher this month.

If you are planning on attending but haven't signed up, give us a call. It's a 2 hour class which gives you time to grab lunch before the Farmer's Wife Sit n Sew which follows directly after.

We will be closed next Wednesday through Friday for Thanksgiving.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving week. Eat lots of pie!

Farmer's Wife Quilt

You may have noticed in the newsletter that we are hosting a Farmer's Wife Quilt Sit Sew one day each month. Our first day is next Monday, Nov. 21 and I wanted to show you four of the blocks done in an assortment of batiks.

The Farmer's Wife Quilt was compiled by Laurie Aaron Hird from letters written by wives of farmers answering a question posed by the editor of a magazine from 1922, "The Farmer's Wife, A Magazine for Farm Women".

Do You Want Your Daughter to Marry A Farmer?

Each block is accompanied with a response from a farm wife and the insights are as down to earth as you can imagine, but it is refreshing none-the-less to read. The book is very popular at the moment with many websites sharing photos of the quilters' progress. It is a super quilt for stash-busting which is what I attempt to do here with my batik collection.

The book has 111 blocks, all 6.5" square and a CD with every pattern included. Now, Marti Michell has acyrlic templates in 6 sets to make the cutting easier and you probably already have some of the sets in your tool-kit. We have used them in several BOMs over the years.

These are fabrics Linda Kay is using in one of her two quilts.

This is going to be an on-going monthly event and everyone is invited to join along and share tips. It is totally informal and free. We look forward to seeing the fabrics you choose along the way.

Linda Kay held her two-day Duffle Bag class last week and here is Dixie J showing her small bag.
The pattern has multiple sizes to make and here are 5 more:

They are so professional-looking! I love the fabric selections here....

Any new quilters out there? or...... Do you know someone who says, "Oh I wish I could make a quilt!"? Well, let's encourage them to LEARN THE BASICS!!!!! We will get them on the right track to start with to piece a quilt. Why the 1/4" seam allowance is SO important and accurate cutting makes life easier!

"My Runners" is a super new book making table runners...... from a Scandinavian perspective.

Have you been reading about or thinking about the "Farmer's Wife" quilt? This is a very popular new book and quilt-along pattern. You can use your stash to make one or use a current fabric line for a fresh new look. Bright Hopes Quilting will be hosting an afternoon each month for anyone interested in working on this lovely project with a fun group of gals! Come join us and visit, laugh, sew and share tips as we work our way through the book. This is not a class but a "sit and sew".

Okay, that's all for now.... watch your email for the newsletter sometime tomorrow!

The Tote Club - October 25

Jayne is teaching the Tote Club class this month..... Rag Bag.

This roomy tote is fast and fun... perfect for a grab and go project.
The class is Thursday, October 25 from 10-2pm.

And Georgia got the last border on that "stained glass" Stonehenge quilt:

I have reached the age where any assistance in seeing is greatly appreciated so when I spied this new Sewline Quick-thru needle-threader, I had to try it out.
I used a No. 8 needle and voila!

It threaded like a champ.
